Two games left, and the NWSL has rarely felt this tight at the top or this messy at the cutoff. Gotham still lead the Shield race, but only just: San Diego are a point back, Washington two, and the top three all have two to play. Below them, Seattle pinched the last playoff spot from North Carolina, and Denver's dream now needs a miracle. Here's where all sixteen teams stand.
San Diego Wave
Five straight wins — nobody in this league is playing better football right now. The 2-1 win in Cary over a desperate Courage side locked up a home quarterfinal, and the kids are leading it: a record-setting season from the teenager Melanie Barcenas, Trinity Byars up to eleven goals. The Shield is one point away.
Gotham FC
Still top of the table, still the defending champions — but Saturday was a missed opportunity. The 1-0 loss in Washington meant no Shield celebration, and a one-point lead with two to play is not a cushion, it's a dare. The experience in this squad says they'll hold on. The wobble says maybe not.
Washington Spirit
First win over Gotham since 2024, playoff spot booked, and Lucia Di Guglielmo's first NWSL goal the winner. The Spirit are peaking at exactly the right time, two points off the Shield with the league's best goal difference. Nobody wants this draw in a quarterfinal.
Kansas City Current
Professional 2-0 winners in Utah, with Chawinga and Hopkins both into double figures for the season. But eight points off the Shield pace tells the story: this is a very good team in a year with three better ones. The ceiling is a deep playoff run, not the trophy they lifted last year.
Angel City FC
Unbeaten in five and the 3-2 win in Denver was a thriller. Best goal difference outside the top three, and a side transformed from last year's bottom-dwellers into genuine contenders. Whatever changed behind the scenes this season, it worked.
Portland Thorns
A 2-2 draw at Bay without Sophia Wilson, suspended — resilience and leaky defending in the same ninety minutes, which is this team in a nutshell. Playoff-tested and dangerous, but the back line keeps handing out invitations.
Utah Royals
Blanked 0-2 at home by Kansas City, and the form has gone patchy (one win in four) at the worst possible moment. Level on points with Angel City but trending the wrong way. Two games to steady the ship and protect a home quarterfinal.
Seattle Reign
The weekend's most consequential result: 3-1 in Chicago, Maddie Mercado with a brace and Jess Fishlock pulling the strings. It lifted the Reign into the last playoff spot and ended Orlando's season in the same afternoon. Timing a run for late October — that's how you do it.
North Carolina Courage
The 2-1 home loss to San Diego was brutal: leapfrogged by Seattle, out of the playoff spots with two to play. Fifteen goals from Ashley Sanchez and it might all be for nothing. The league's great underachievers, again.
Denver Summit FC
The expansion side's 3-2 home defeat to Angel City leaves the playoff maths nearly impossible: win both remaining games and hope two of Seattle, North Carolina and Portland lose both. A fine debut season in this league; the ending is going to sting.
Orlando Pride
Beat Houston 2-1 on goals from Luana and rookie Solai Washington — and were eliminated anyway when Seattle won later that day. Barbra Banda's fifteen goals deserved a playoff stage. A strange, frustrating season for a talented squad.
Boston Legacy FC
A 2-1 Friday win over Louisville for the league's other expansion side. Year one was always about laying foundations, and 32 points is a respectable slab to build on.
Houston Dash
Lost 2-1 at home to an already-doomed Orlando. The Dash have been rebuilding for so long it's starting to look like the permanent state of the club.
Bay FC
The 2-2 with Portland was a point earned, not two dropped. But 27 points in year two is stagnation, not progress — this young side was supposed to be further along by now.
Racing Louisville
Lost 2-1 in Boston: 24 points and a minus-17 goal difference. Competitive most weeks, rewarded almost none of them. The gap between effort and outcome is the story of another lost season.
Chicago Stars
Thumped 3-1 at home by Seattle: 17 points and a minus-50 goal difference. Read that again — minus fifty. The worst season in the league by a distance, and it's not close.
